Nesta is holding the next IMPETUS webinar online on the topic of Citizen Science and Climate Resilience. This next topic is a double bill, with the first part on Wednesday, 26th February 2025 – 12:30 – 13:30 GMT – specifically focused on how citizen science is being used to understand and monitor urban extreme heat.
The second part is a week later on Wednesday 5th March 12:30 – 13:30 GMT on the benefits of citizen science for water management.
These online seminars are for local authorities, municipalities, public sector organisations and anyone interested in working with citizen science data. They aim to provide participants with practical resources and insights for using citizen science in their work.
These webinars are part of IMPETUS, a citizen science innovation programme that aims to bring citizen science closer to society and policymakers and to acknowledge its role in tackling the greatest challenges of our times.

More Information – Citizen Science for Urban Extreme Heat
This 1hr online webinar explores how citizen science data has been used in monitoring and tackling urban extreme heat.
This online seminar is for local authorities, municipalities, public sector organisations and anyone interested in working with citizen science data. It aims to provide participants with practical resources and insights for using citizen science in their work.

We will be joined by Josep Perello and Isabelle Bonhoure from Open Systems research group who will share insights about their new project Heat Chronicles to tackle urban extreme heat in Barcelona. We will also hear from two IMPETUS accelerator pilots that are also using different types of citizen science approaches to address the urban heat island effect in Barcelona, CALOR and Heat Watchers in Action.
Key questions to be explored include the following:
- What are the challenges and opportunities of using citizen science data to tackle extreme urban heat?
- What are the practicalities of combining citizen-generated data with official data and other forms of traditional monitoring data?
- How can we facilitate connections between the citizen science community and key stakeholders outside of it, such as local authorities and other organisations interested in using citizen science data?
- What is the potential value of citizen science data for local authorities and public institutions? How can this be leveraged to scale citizen science?

Eleanor Starkey will join us from Northumbria University she will share her insights on the practicalities of using citizen science data across various projects, including the Upstream project in the UK and Taiwan and SUDS+, UK.
We will also have a brief overview from River PRO, one of Sicily’s IMPETUS accelerator pilots focused on river management.
The workshop is part of IMPETUS, a citizen science innovation programme that aims to bring citizen science closer to society and policymakers and to acknowledge its role in tackling the greatest challenges of our times.
