As it comes to that time of year when we all start buying new calendars (or at least updating our online ones) for 2025. We thought this would be the best time to remind you of some of the important IMPETUS dates you may not want to miss!

Our Third and Final Open Call for Citizen Science Projects

We are busy preparing for our final open call for the third edition of the European Prize for Citizen  Science and the IMPETUS Accelerator ProgrammeThese calls occur in tandem and will open on January 7th; the call for the European Prize will end on March 10th, and the call for the Accelerator will run until March 13th.

Further details:

For the Accelerator:

This year, we are looking to support projects that focus on our two challenge topics:

  • Citizen Science to Promote Circular Communities.
    • Resource Management
    • Infrastructure and Housing
    • Disaster Resilience
  • Citizen Science for a Fair and Just Society.
    • Democracy and Peace
    • Inclusion
    • Public Trust and Empowerment

What support is available within the Accelerator?

Two grant types are available:

  • Kickstarting grants: If you are starting or have recently established a new project, you can apply for a kickstarting grant. Successful applicants will receive €20,000, mentoring and training support to help establish your initiative for seven months.
  • Sustaining grants: If your project is ongoing, you can apply for a sustaining grant; successful applicants will receive €10,000, mentoring, and training support for seven months.

For the European Prize for Citizen Science:

The European Union Prize for Citizen Science consists of three main awards. A Grand Prize of 60,000€, as well as two additional prizes to projects that best demonstrate how citizen science can be used to promote Diversity and Collaboration and Digital Communities, both of which will be awarded 20,000€.

But we also know that there is so much great citizen science happening in Europe right now, so IMPETUS will give honourable mentions to 27 additional projects, who will have their work showcased alongside the winners of the three prizes at the 2025 Ars Electronica Science and Technology Festival, on September 3-7, 2025.

More information about the open call will be available in January, but if you have any questions, join us for one of our webinars on the 22nd of January or the 19th of February to have all your questions answered.

The IMPETUS project aims to promote citizen science at all levels and help these projects achieve their impressive goals. We can not wait to hear all about the great citizen science you are doing!
